Causes Of Inguinal Hernias
Inguinal hernias are one of the hardest types for health experts to understand. Because of this they have a hard time trying to determine the exact cause for it. Most believe that extreme pressure in the stomach, a weak spot in the abdominal wall that is pre-existing, or both are the most common reasons for it.
According to research the majority of people who have an inguinal hernia have had a weak area in their abdominal wall since they were born. This occurs when the abdominal lining is not able to close properly during the development stage. In other cases when the patient is much older it can be caused when the muscles in the abdomen have become weak due to aging, heavy physical activity, or other factors such as this.
This condition can be most commonly found in men over women. This is because they have a bigger weakness that runs along the inguinal canal. Women have wombs which makes theirs much stronger and able to handle more pressure. When the men are a baby developing inside of the womb the testicles will form in the abdomen and then travel down to the scrotum.
After they are born the inguinal canal will close with just enough room to allow the spermatic cord to travel through. It is not large enough to allow the testicles to travel back through the abdomen. Yet, there are times when the canal will not close the way it should and the area will become and vulnerable.
If you have a pre-existing condition or if age and other factors have weakened the abdominal wall then these will also cause an inguinal canal in both men and women:
- Extreme heavy lifting
- Pregnancy
- Obesity
- Straining while urinating
- Straining during bowel movement
- Fluid contained in the abdomen
- Chronic coughing
- Chronic sneezing
