Femoral Hernia Causes
In order to know how to effectively treat a femoral hernia and how it should be diagnosed you must first understand what it is that causes it. In some cases it is possible that the hernia developed on its own – but in order to do this it needs some type of pressure placed on it that helped to push the contents out of the abdomen. This can include:
- Coughing
- Pregnancy
- Straining during urination
- Straining during bowel movements
- Attempting to lift heavy items
- Straining of muscles during physical exercise or other activities
Diagnosing Femoral Hernias
If you believe that you are suffering from a femoral hernia and have had any of the symptoms that it can cause or have a bulge in that area then you should make an appointment with your doctor. They will need to do a GP examination of your groin. This exam can be done while you are standing up or sitting down.
They will try to feel a lump that should be situated in the area of the groin. They may need you to cough because added pressure will cause the lump to be pushed into the femoral canal and will make the lump larger. If they find it they will try to push it back in place to reduce it.
Though it has been pushed back any amount of pressure will push it out again. Because of this they will suggest a surgeon that will be able to remove it for you. Make sure that you discuss the different types of surgeries that are available to use and how they will help. If you do not use surgery than you run a risk of the hernia becoming strangulated in the future.
