Hiatal Hernia Causes

Hiatal hernias are some of the most rarer forms of hernias that are able to develop. However, this does not mean that you will never have to deal with them. Hernias may not always be a huge problem or concern for people – but it is still important to know all of the details surrounding them.

It is important to know all of the Hiatal hernia symptoms as well as what causes them. When we are able to establish the causes of it we will be able to do what we are able to avoid it and also learn the proper method in which it should be treated.

Health experts believe that Hiatal hernias are induced by an esophageal hiatus that is large than it should be. This is the opening inside of the diaphragm that allows the esophagus to travel from through the chest and into the abdomen. Because of this abnormally large opening a part of the stomach is able to make its way inside of the chest. There are other factors that we must consider and which can attribute to this condition.

It is possible that there is a shortening of the esophagus that is caused by scarring from acid reflux or inflammation. These factors are able to pull contents out of the stomach and up through the hiatus opening.

Another common cause for this is an abnormally loose attachment that the esophagus has to the diaphragm. This attachment makes it weak and vulnerable for the stomach to travel up the esophagus and into the chest.

Diagnosing

In order to know for sure if you have a Hiatal hernia the doctor will need to do an upper gastrointestinal x-ray or endoscopy. They will also need to know what symptoms – if any – you have been experiencing.
