Live workshop on Laparoscopic Surgery in Shishu Hospital

A two-day live workshop on ‘Pediatric Laparoscopic Surgery’ ended in Dhaka Shishu (Children) Hospital yesterday in collaboration with Society of Surgeons of Bangladesh (SOB).

A total of 10 cases were operated during the workshop.

The cases included recurrent appendicitis, bilateral inguinal hernia, infantile hypertrophic pyloric stenosis, bilateral undesconded tests, anorectal wal formation, hirschsprung’s disease, billary afresia and GBastroesophaseal reflux.

It is the first pediatric Laparoscopic workshop in Bangladesh as a combined approach. Prof Dr Anisudha Shah, a renowned Laparoscopic surgeon of Indian Association of Pediatric Surgeons conducted the operations as chief surgeon.

The workshop was coordinated, among others, by Prof Dr Kabirul Islam of Dhaka Shishu Hospital, Dr Ashrarur Rahman, Dr Shahjahan, Dr Nirupoma Saha and Dr Ferdous.

A total of 120 surgeons of different hospitals actively participated in the workshop.

The participants included, Prof Dr AR Khan, Dr Jafrul Hannan, Dr Arifur Rahman, Dr Swapan Paul, Dr Rezaul, Ashfaqur Rahman, Dr Saiful Islam, Dr Epsita, Dr Millat, Dr Quamrunnahar, Prof AFM Masood, Prof Shafiqul Haque, Prof Md Shahid Karim, Dr Majumder AKM Masud, Dr Zahid, Dr Samidur Rahman, Dr Kazi Habibur Rahman.

Talking to The New Nation, Prof Md Salim Shakur, Director of Dhaka Shishu Hospital, said introduction of Laparoscopic surgery, first time in the hospital would extend the treatment facilities to the children.

According to him, the main features and benefits of the surgery are: no operative scars, no pain after operation, quick recovery, minimum hospital stay, economic saving, less infection rate, quick turnover, reduce hospital pressure and better acceptance by the patients.
