Strangulated Hernia

There are many different types of hernias – which are able to develop in different areas of the body. People who have one of these hernias will suffer from various symptoms and ways in which they are able to treat it. But there is one thing that they all have in common they can sometimes be reduced and they can become strangulated.

When people have a hernia they will try to force the contents inside of the mass back into the area where it came from. This is referred to as a reducible hernia and is one of the easiest types to have. This allows people to maintain the uncomfortable feeling that the mass causes and to keep it pushed in through different methods.

A strangulate hernia is one of the worst things that anyone could have and is something that can happen to any type. This is caused when the hernia is twisted with other intestines.

When this happens it is obstructing certain areas and causing the blood supply to be cut off to the intestine. With no blood running to it the intestine can die and it will happen quickly. These are considered to be very dangerous and should be treated immediately. With no treatment the area will become gangrene and it can cause bleeding and septicemia.

Symptoms of A Strangulated Hernia

If you or someone you know is experiencing these symptoms than you need to take them to the hospital immediately. Strangulated herniasĀ are a serious and condition that must be treated before any of the intestines are killed and an infection occurs. The only way to treat it is through surgery.

I’d like to see some statistics of how many die from strangulated hernias. I feel the advice to get surgery *now* is manipulative. I don’t see a proper weighing of the possibilities of dying from strangulation vs the possibility of dying from hernia surgery or resulting complications.

I recently underwent surgery for a strangulated hernia. I had a large hernia for several months with no problems. However, once it became strangulated It was only a matter of days before I needed emergency surgery. I experienced severe stomach pain and was taken to the emergency room. After determining that it was indeed due to a strangulated hernia, I was scheduled for surgery the next day. The surgery involed removing 10′ of my intestine that had died. Fortunately I came out of the surgery fine, however, had I waited another day or 2, I probably would have been extremely ill or even died. My surgery was 4 weeks ago. I spent 1 week in the hospital to ensure that there were no complications and have been home 3 weeks now. I feel great, really had NO pain after surgery. I’m eating normally, walking 1/2 mile a day and have just limited restrictions on my physical activity. Don’t put off surgery, it might save your life.
