What is hernia mesh patch and what is all the fuss about?

I had hernia surgery and now I found out I have to have inguinal hernia surgery. I read online there is a big lawsuit going on concerning the patches they use in the hernia repair procedure, what is hernia mesh patch and how do I know if it was used in my surgery?

The Bard Composix Kugel Mesh Patch is used to repair ventral (incisional) hernias caused by thinning or stretching of scar tissue that forms after surgery. The patch is placed behind the hernia defect through a small incision. The patch is then held open by a “memory recoil ring” that allows the patch to be folded for insertion and later spring open and lay flat once it is in place.

The memory recoil ring that opens the Hernia Mesh Patch can break under the stress of placement of the large size surgical patch in the abdomen. This can lead to bowel perforations and intestinal fistulae (abnormal connections or passageways between the intestines and other organs).

A hernia patch of this size is generally not used for inguinal hernia repair surgery.
